Tata Vista D90 review test drive

Tata plonks a more powerful diesel motor in the Vista. We find out how good it is.

With Tata carrying out extensive exercises to constantly improve its range of cars, we’ve seen quite a few updates, facelifts and upgrades on several of the manufacturer’s products like the Manza. The latest in the line-up to get a new avatar is the Indica Vista with a 90PS (89bhp) diesel engine. It is powered by the 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet diesel engine that is shared with the likes of Maruti Swift and the new Chevrolet Sail. It makes the extra power (and pulling power) thanks to a different turbocharger and different engine tuning. The company claims this turbocharger, known as a variable-geometry turbo, improves the car’s low-speed responsiveness as well.

Apart from the engine, a whole host of other changes have been carried out on this car to improve driving performance, ride and handling. The D90 has a new sound-deadening package to cut down on in-cabin noise when the car is on the move, and Tata has also tweaked the suspension to help the car handle the extra power.

The good thing about the new engine is that it’s perfect for driving around in traffic – it’s responsive enough and has adequate power. However, if you want a sudden burst of power to, say, shoot into a gap in traffic, the engine will leave you wanting. There is quite a bit of throttle lag, but rev the engine past 2500rpm and a big burst of power comes in, which can get irritating.

On the highway, the D90 will hold three-digit speeds quite comfortably and the engine is pretty refined as well. Other plus points include the light-action clutch and gearshift, and the way that it is rather easy to drive. Interestingly, the Vista D90 is slower getting to 100kph than the lower-powered Swift diesel. At 13.9sec, the Tata takes 0.3sec longer than the Maruti and we think this is because of the extra 150kg on the Vista over its competitors. Tata puts down the extra weight to the Vista’s extra-strong reinforced steel body shell. But it is a lot faster than the 75bhp Vista which takes 16.3sec for the same run.

And if the engine impresses you, the cabin’s insulation from noise will completely bowl you over. Even at 140kph, the cabin is hushed, and you can actually have a conversation with your passengers without having to raise your voice. The tweaks to the suspension mean bad roads are dealt with comfortably and almost noiselessly. These improvements and the spacious cabin give the impression of being in a bigger car.

Tata says the handling has improved, and this is true to a certain extent – the D90 does feel safe in the way it handles and high-speed stability is excellent – but it would be pushing things a bit to call it a sporty handler.

Tata has also added new equipment to the Vista D90. In addition to the power windows and electric mirrors, the Vista gets a touchscreen audio system that includes voice-guided navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and an input for any possible form of media that you might feel like using (USB, aux-in, SD card and DVD). It’s also got climate control.

The manufacturer has also done a thorough job with the interiors, having upgraded a lot of the plastics, seat materials and even the air-con switches. Of course, close scrutiny will still reveal a few patchy bits – the volume knob on the audio system, for example. However, the Vista D90 is testament to the fact that Tata has come a long way in improving the interiors of its cars.

The rest of the car remains as is. Good bits like the spaciousness and practicality are intact. The new two-tone dashboard is also nice. The beige lower cabin enhances the feeling of space and the smart (if a bit hard to read) dials lend a touch of sophistication. That said, the boot could definitely have been a bit bigger.

At around Rs 6.6 lakh for the ZX+ trim and Rs 6 lakh for the lower-spec VX, the Vista D90 is a whole lakh cheaper than the Fiat Punto 90HP. It’s much better value than the Punto as well, simply because it’s got a lot more equipment and is a lot more practical.

BMW Boss Front Wheel Drive Bimmers will be “The Ultimate Driving Machine

The times, they are a-Changing sang Bob Dylan, and they did. And for the most part, it’s for the better –or we’d still be living in caves. But when one of the staples of the motoring world embraces a new philosophy, be prepared for the purists to cry “FAIL”. The news of BMW adopting front-wheel-drive for its future compact models is the perfect example.
For decades Munich has bombarded us with its naturally aspirated in-line engines, be that with 4, 6, 8 or 10 cylinders along with 50/50 perfect weight distribution and the “ultimate driving machine” tag.
Now turbos are all the rage, even in the M-division and they are trickling down to the rest of the lineup in the name of fuel economy and CO2 emissions. But a FWD BMW? Where is this world coming to?
BMW Group board member Ian Robertson has a perfect counterargument: “In the last 10 years we have built nearly two million front-wheel-drive Minis and no one has ever told me the driving dynamics are questionable”, Robertson told Australia’s Drive magazine at this week’s 6 Series coupe launch in Germany.
And true enough, he does have a point there as the Mini is one of the most fun to drive hatchbacks on the market. Robertson is confident about the new direction his company is taking:
“I think we are very, very capable of developing a front-wheel-drive platform that has certain advantages in terms of design and the use of space, and at the same time will be a BMW as you always expected it to be,” said Robertson.
“Take the badge and the heritage out of it and put the capability into it. Capability is what is important. The whole essence of what you experience from a rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, customers expect it to be a BMW … and that is what is driving us,” he added.
The reasons behind the change of heart, at least for smaller models in the range, are the obvious advantages of FWD vs RWD in packaging, interior space and, of course, cost. Besides, even Mercedes-Benz and Audi, with their A-Class and A1 respectively, insist on the benefits of this layout.
Therefore, the recently launched second generation of the 1-Series may well be the last small BMW with RWD, as its successor will most likely adopt the firm’s new FWD platform architecture.

New Mahindra electric car is e2o

Mahindra e2o to be produced in Bangalore and will be priced at around RS 5.5-6 lakh.

New Mahindra electric car is e2o
                                      Mahindra Reva e2o

Mahindra has officially revealed that the replacement of the Reva electric car will be called the Mahindra e2o. The e2o was earlier showcased at the Auto Expo as the Reva NX-R. We broke the news of the Reva NX-R being called the e2o in October last year.

According to Mahindra, the e2o is a result of the group’s vision of the ‘future of mobility’. It involves the creation of future-ready vehicles that meet the 5 Cs framework of – clean, convenient, connected, clever and cost effective.

The e2o will be manufactured at Mahindra’s new plant in Bangalore. This plant, according to the company, has a rated annual production capacity of 30,000 cars.

The Mahindra e2o will come with an electric motor that derives power from 48-volt lithium-ion batteries capable of powering the car for about 100km on a single charge. Mahindra sees promise in this project and is considering leasing out the batteries which are an expensive component to replace. With prices likely to range from Rs 5.5-6 lakh, India’s latest EV won’t be cheap but SOPs on electric cars could bring prices down in the future.

Peugeot RCZ View Top Concept by Magna Steyr Shown Ahead of Geneva

The Peugeot RCZ is a car that puts all of its eggs in a styling basket, and thus it attracts a certain kind of buyer – though, it definitely doesnt have the mass appeal of the similar Audi TT or Volkswagen Scirocco.
However, it is bound to get more interesting if Magna Steyrs open-roof version of the RCZ will make it to market with its clever sliding/folding roof mechanism shown in the photos below.

Peugeot RCZ View

Peugeot RCZ View

Peugeot RCZ View

Peugeot RCZ View

Peugeot RCZ View

Called ‘View Top’, it features separate glass segments, which are connected with regular textile material, to form a watertight seal. It reportedly takes just 12 seconds to open or close, turning the RCZ into a much more interesting car in the process.

Worth noting is that, since the tapering windscreen pillars have been retained, engineers wont have to add any strengthening beams, as the rigidity is still all there. This means that, if it gets past the concept stage, this car could make a lot more sense than the coupe, as it is more of a cruiser than an actual sports car – and its always a much more enjoyable experience to cruise in an open-top car.

Another noteworthy aspect is the problem of room in the rear. The coupe version of the RCZ has a rather snazzy-looking ‘double-bubble’ roof, which not only looks cool, but it also offers that extra bit of rear headroom. The car is very tight in the back as it is, so its transformation into a convertible would render the rear seats completely useless.

You will be able to see the open-top RCZ in the metal at this year’s edition of the Geneva Motor Show.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Information Specification Modification Image Review 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet
Porsche has already taken the wraps off its next-generation 911 but the virtually identical convertible, or “Cabriolet” in Porsche speak, is still under development.

As can be seen by these latest spy shots, prototypes appear to be almost complete, though there could be some major surprises before the covers do finally come off.

Porsche is going to great length to break as much new ground as possible with its latest 2012 911.

For instance, the automaker has introduced a new seven-speed manual, a world first for a production car, but it also looks like the 911 Cabriolet will get an intricate folding roof composed of both metal sections and traditional canvas.
The 911 is available as either a coupe or a cabriolet, in either a rear-wheel drive (Carrera) or an all-wheel drive (Carrera 4) configuration, as well as a Turbo all-wheel drive model. The 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 are powered by a 345-hp direct-injection 3.6-liter flat six-cylinder, and the Carrera S and Carrera 4Ss are powered by a 385-hp direct-injection 3.8-liter flat six-cylinder engine. The Turbo is a 500-hp version of the 3.8-liter (530-hp in the Turbo S). Transmission choices are a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch known as PDK. The track-derived GT3 is powered by a 435-hp 3.8-liter flat six-cylinder engine and comes exclusively as a rear-wheel drive coupe with a six-speed manual transmission.

For 2012, a Carrera GTS has been added to the line-up to bridge the gap between the Carerra and the Turbo, it sports a 408-hp version of the 3.8-liter engine, and is available in rear- or all-wheel drive. Also, a limited edition of the rear-wheel drive Carerra called Black Edition has been introduced. Late in the 2012 model year, an all new 911 will be introduced, the 991-generation will be launched as a RWD coupe and convertible first, with more variation to come in the following model year.

Both models will be backed up by a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. A seven-speed manual transmission will be optional.
When it hits Australian shores in March, prices will kick off at $255,100 for the base model Carrera (up from $245,300 from the outgoing model), and $288,300 for the Carrera S Cabriolet (up from $275,100).
More images of the new variant have been released to build up anticipation before its show debut (click on the ‘Gallery’ button at the top of the article to see them all). The Detroit show starts on January 9.source:autos.aol.com,caradvice.com.au,motorauthority.com

2011 Jeep Liberty

Specifications prices Modifications and Image 2011 Jeep Liberty
The 2011 Jeep Liberty ranks 21 out of 23 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 49 published reviews and test drives of the Jeep Liberty, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Jeep designed the 2011 Liberty to be a good-looking off-road SUV. The Liberty meets these standards, but compared to more capable compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and Nissan Xterra that offer better fuel economy, increased cargo space and a cheaper price, the Liberty is easy to pass up.

The 2011 Jeep Liberty stands out for two reasons: it has an eye catching rugged exterior and a unique Sky Slider full-length canvas roof that isn’t available on the competition. Other than that, the Liberty doesn’t have much to offer. Its fuel economy ratings and cargo space are so-so; the backseat is tight and it’s pricey for what you get.

Why buy a Liberty if it obviously isn’t the best car in the class? First, it has all wheel drive, which doesn’t come with all compact SUVs. Second, the Liberty carries Jeep’s nameplate, so if you’ve always wanted a Jeep and are willing to compromise in a few areas, the Liberty will suit your needs just fine. Still, keep in mind that the Liberty is not an ideal family car.
INTERIOR
The Libertys cabin has all the aesthetic flair of a storage shed -- its angular and drab. The materials are also on par with a storage shed, though at least some of them get covered up with some padding and leather in the Limited. In any case, most non-Jeep SUVs feature more welcoming and higher-quality environments. At least the standard cabin controls are generally well-located and easy to use -- the optional touchscreen interface can be a tad unintuitive, however.

Rear legroom and shoulder room are adequate in the Liberty, but the seat is flat and not particularly comfortable. Luggage space with the rear seat in place is a healthy 31.5 cubic feet; fold the seatback and youre looking at 64 cubic feet, an average figure for this class.

A sunroof is optional on the Sport and Renegade, while the full-roof "Sky Slider" cloth sunroof is optional on all trims. Optional on the Sport and Limited 4x4 is the Media Center 430, which adds a CD/DVD player, digital music storage and a touchscreen interface. A navigation system can be added to the Media Center, and the two together are available on all Liberty trims. The Renegade can be equipped with the Navigation Convenience Group, which adds the Media Center 430, the navigation system, a tire-pressure monitor display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the Limiteds eight-speaker sound system. The Renegades Premium Group is similar, but swaps out the navigation system in favor of rear parking sensors, remote ignition and Bluetooth.
EXTERIOR
The 2011 Jeep Liberty is a compact SUV available in Sport, Renegade and Limited trim levels. The Sport and Limited can be had with either rear- or four-wheel drive, but the Renegade is 4x4 only.

The Limited includes the Popular Equipment Group and adds 17-inch wheels, exterior chrome trim, heated power front seats (six-way driver, two-way passenger), driver memory functions, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system. The Comfort/Convenience Group adds rear parking sensors, remote ignition and automatic climate control. Also optional are 18-inch chrome-clad wheels.

The Renegade is an off-road-oriented model that to the Sports equipment adds different 16-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, an enhanced 4x4 system, tow hooks, different exterior trim, skid plates and much of the equipment from the Popular Equipment Group.
ENGINE
Once offered with a four-cylinder, Jeep has dropped this engine option from the Liberty with the introduction of its four-cylinder Patriot and Compass models.

The only motivating source for the Liberty is now a 3.7-liter V6. Featuring lightweight aluminum components, it produces 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque.

It is connected to a standard fully synchronized six-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic, which transfers power to either two wheels or all four. The automatic has a special tow-haul button to adjust gear shifting for better efficiency when towing. When properly equipped, the Liberty can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Both the Selec-Trac II and Command-Trac II four-wheel-drive systems are very well integrated into Libertys various systems, including traction control, Electronic Stability Program, hill-start assist, hill-descent control and available trailer tow package.

Fuel economy for two-wheel-drive models is 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models achieve only slightly lower numbers, at 15 mpg city and 21 highway.

A 19.5-gallon fuel tank provides an approximate driving range of 389 miles.

Available on Liberty Limited and Sport models is a Sky Slider roof, an expansive sunroof that is 3.5 times larger than a regular sunroof. A regular sunroof is also available.
SAFETY
The Liberty comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, active front head restraints and side curtain airbags. In Edmunds brake testing, the Liberty came to a stop from 60 mph in a longer-than-average 134 feet.

The 2011 Jeep Liberty has not been rated using the governments new, more strenuous 2011 crash testing procedures. According to 2010 ratings (which arent comparable to 2011), the Liberty received the highest five-star rating in all frontal and side categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Liberty its top mark of "Good" in the frontal-offset and roof strength tests, but the second-lowest of "Marginal" in the side crash test.
